The Truth About Tallow
Tallow skincare is actually something that has been around for centuries, but more recently people have been rediscovering the benefits of tallow for skin. Turns out our ancestors knew what they were doing!
Why would anyone put beef fat on their skin?
Well, tallow is the ultimate skin healing and soothing moisturiser. The composition of tallow is actually similar to our own sebum and so our skin easily recognises it, absorbs it and puts it to use immediately. Tallow is incredibly rich in collagen and packed with beneficial nutrients that the skin needs for repair in order to stay youthful, healthy, hydrated and soft. This includes fat soluble vitamins A, D, E + K as well as B12 and an abundance of minerals, all of which are naturally occurring and derived from the animal. Tallow is also naturally rich in fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6 (linoleic acids) as well as stearic acid and oleic acid which work to calm inflammation, promote skin repair, cleanse and maintain moisture levels.
Tallow is not only great for repairing damaged skin but it also helps to prevent damage to the skin as it is rich in antioxidants which keep skin strong and resilient. Tallow also contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties and natural antimicrobial properties which can help to prevent acne and breakouts.
Tallow is so versatile and can be used in many ways including a full body moisturiser, daily face moisturiser, nourishing night cream, anti-ageing cream, makeup remover, baby lotion, nappy rash cream, nipple balm, after shave, beard balm, deep conditioning treatment for scalp and hair, intensive lip moisturiser and even a sunburn remedy. It is great for minor skin wounds and an incredible natural remedy for soothing eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and even stretch marks and scars.
Tallow feels oily, can you use it for oily skin?
Absolutely! In fact, it is great for oily skin. When skin is stripped from it’s natural oils from over-cleansing and too many harsh skincare products it will overcompensate by producing extra oil. Our bodies are very clever and always trying to maintain a level of balance! By using a gentle cleansing method (like the oil cleansing method, with tallow and or/coconut oil) you won’t strip your skin of it's natural oils.
Tallow is noncomedogenic, which means it does not clog pores despite the slightly oil-like texture. A little really does go a long way and you do not need much more than a pea-sized amount to nourish your entire face. If you are noticing clogged pores, take it as a sign that you are using too much. Your skin should not feel excessively oily after application but it will have a slight dewy feel and a beautiful, radiant glow. Everyone’s skin is different, you will quickly figure out how much your skin needs and find that sweet spot!
